PIA is an exceptional piece of sailing heritage – the last Sonderklasse ever built according to the original class rules and the only one ever constructed in Austria. Introduced in 1899 under the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II, the Sonderklasse is considered the first true class built according to a formula in sailing history. Its performance remains remarkable to this day: only about 1,850 kg of displacement paired with an impressive 51 m² of sail area – a ratio that delivers breathtaking speed and agility. Thanks to this outstanding combination of length, weight, and sail area, PIA is perfectly suited for prestigious regattas such as Monaco Classic Week, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, Régates Royales in Cannes or the ‘Münchner Woche’.Built in 1922 by the Österreichische Schiffswerft AG in Gmunden, following the design of Ing. Otto Katzinger, PIA features a mahogany hull, teak deck, and a Bergner spruce mast renewed in 2015. Extensive refits in 1994 and 2018/19 ensure her excellent overall condition.
